You must unlearn what you have learned.

If you’ve visited us today in search of the typical “how-to” business post, prepare yourself. We do things a bit differently here in order to make a professional point, and folks, we’re ‘bout to get downright scientific on you. We’re bringing “The Force” back into business.

For example: Did you know that 4 fundamental forces govern our entire universe? That’s right… gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force and the weak force are at work at all times in every situation to make sure that you and all the other matter in the universe doesn’t simply fall apart into a gazillion little pieces and float away. It is the invisible cosmic energy-glue that quite literally binds us together.

Quantum physics is pretty freaking cool, and the basics are really not all that complicated. Mr. Einstein boiled it all down for us: It’s all about how energy affects mass and vice-versa. In fact, Albert’s theory states that mass and energy are in fact interchangeable — you can make one into the other. They are two forms of the same thing. Given the right conditions, mass can turn into energy. If energy is compressed enough, it can actually be transformed into solid mass.

What the heck does this have to do with small business success?

We think everything. If Einstein’s theory is to be believed, then one might also theorize that these forces also govern your business.

Especially the “Big E.”

It’s all about energy. The energy we create about, around, inside and beyond our businesses is in direct relationship to its potential mass and velocity.

In physics, “mass” is defined as the quantity of matter in a body regardless of its volume or of any forces acting on it. In business, it’s really defined the same way when you think about it. M-A-S-S. As in, the mass o’ greenbacks you see stacked up in the bank at the end of the month; the mass o’ square footage; the mass o’ physical locations, or the mass o’ loyal customers who come knock-knock-knocking on your door. And velocity? It’s how fast the cash register repeatedly goes ca-ching.

Starting to become clearer? Let’s hammer this lesson home:

The growth you see in your business today is a direct reflection of the amount of energy you created for your customers yesterday.

Take a minute for that to really sink in. The energy that surrounds your company is one of the biggest forces that attract customers to your front door. It works a lot like a magnet. It can either be the main draw —or the main repellent — of the people who buy what you have to sell.

Are you generating energy that can be felt by your clients? Do they feel intrigued when they hear about you? Energized when they are in your place of business? Excited to work with you?

Or are they indifferent?

Here’s our big tip of the day: Don’t EVER let them be indifferent.

Customers get to choose whether they’d like to do business with you.

Some might choose you out of convenience. You might sell something that others see as a satisfaction of their basic needs, and that’s great – you have identified a niche that serves a purpose. But your M-A-S-S and velocity will then only reflect the size of your niche. Convenience and need are factors, not forces

If you want to see true growth, you have to find a way to create some energy around your business. Energy is the catalyst for growth.

At Small Town Growth Group, we have a very “official” sounding list of services. What all of these services really do… is create positive energy around your business. Energy that your customers can feel, so your M-A-S-S can continue to grow. The tangible elements might look like a store interior or a web site or a brand story or brochure, but what all of those things do is spark the right kind of environmental and mental energy that shifts the minds of consumers. That shift is what helps businesses succeed.

It takes a certain kind of energy to make your company visible. It takes another kind of energy to attract new customers. Reeling in big fish instead of little ones… well that takes another kind of energy still. To create the kind of energy that can create true velocity for your business, there are four elements that can create quantum leaps.

Force #1: A crystal clear vision for the future and strategy for getting there.

Force #2: An energized, engaging personality — in your message and your environment.

Force #3: High impact marketing and strategic promotions.

Force #4: A program for managing of all of the above.

Friends, when these 4 forces are given adequate attention, they work together in the same way as those powerhouse universal bad boys we discussed during our science lesson. These forces are your energy generators. They are the forces that bind your business together.

They create energy.

They create velocity.

They propel you forward.

They create growth.

And if you want to have a business that with unlimited growth potential, they are very, very necessary.

Unfortunately, these are also THE top four things small businesses and destinations frequently overlook. Small businesses tend to get an idea for a business, hang out a shingle and hope someone near-by likes what they have to offer. That approach might bring business. But it won’t bring the kind of growth we hear people asking for every single day.

Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere!
